    • Bachelor of Science in Education in Health Education (B.S.Ed.)

    Twenty-six credit hours of course work are required with a 2.5 grade point average.

    A concentration in Community Health Education is available to students in the Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) in Health Education degree program. The program prepares students to meet the competencies of the roles and responsibilities of the entry-level Health Specialist. The Community Health Education concentration is a non-teaching concentration which provides students with a broad-based introduction to community and public health and prepares them for professional practice in community health agencies, clinical settings and the work place. The concentration prepares students for graduate studies in Health Education at the University of New Mexico or any of the many schools of public health in the United States. Screening by Health Education faculty is a prerequisite to entering into the program. Applications for B.S.Ed. in the Health Education program are on the department Web site or see an advisor in Travelstead Hall.

    NOTE: Student’s course work must include the University of New Mexico core requirements and at least 40 credit hours of upper-division (300–level and above).

    Minor Study

    School Health Education

    The curriculum leading to a minor in School Health Education is designed to prepare the student to teach health education in middle and/or junior and senior high schools (grades 7-12). Students who are awarded the School Health Education minor may apply to New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) for a health endorsement after they obtain their initial teaching license and first area of endorsement. 

    Requirements

    All the courses listed for School Health Education minor support specific content taught as a school health educator. A grade of C or better is required for each content course listed.
