College of Arts and Sciences and East Asian Studies Major Undergraduate Admission Requirements

A minimum of 26 credit hours; 23 credit hours must be in courses acceptable toward graduation.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 on all work.

  • Transfer students must have a 2.0 transfer GPA.
  • Continuing UNM students must have a 2.00 institutional GPA.

Demonstrated academic achievement by satisfying the following:

  • Completion of General Education Curriculum: Communication.
  • Completion of General Education Curriculum: Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Completion of General Education Curriculum: Second Language, preferably with either CHIN 1130 or JAPN 1130.

Completion of Asian Studies major admission coursework with grade of "C" or better: 

  • CHIN 1140 or JAPN 1135 or the equivalent. It is advised that students also complete CHIN 2110, CHIN 2120, JAPN 2110, JAPN 2120, or the equivalent.

  • Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies (B.A.)

Major Study Requirements

Students majoring in East Asian Studies choose one of two options, Chinese or Japanese. The interdepartmental major requires 30 credit hours from the approved East Asian Studies course list:

Chinese Option

  • Twelve credit hours in language: CHIN 301 and 302 and 305 and 401.
  • CHIN 343.
  • Three credit hours in History: HIST 2256.
  • Three credit hours in East Asian or Japanese culture courses selected from the following: HIST 2256; JAPN 339, 341, 342, 345, 370, *411; RELG 2110.
  • Nine credit hours of electives selected from the following courses: 

    CHIN 320, 343, 370; PHIL 336, 431; or any other China-related classes offered on campus, based on pre-approval with the East Asian Studies advisor.

Japanese Option

  • Twelve credit hours in language: JAPN 301 and 302 and 401 and 402.
  • Three credit hours in literature: JAPN 341 or 342.
  • Three credit hours in History: HIST 2256.
  • Three credit hours in East Asian or Chinese culture or history selected from the following courses: CHIN 320, 343, 370; HIST 2256; RELG 2110; PHIL 336.
  • Nine credit hours of electives selected from the following courses: JAPN 320, 339, 341, 342, 345, 370, *411; or any other Japan-related classes offered on campus, based on pre-approval with the East Asian Studies advisor.

Second Major Study Requirements

Students who choose East Asian Studies (either Chinese or Japanese track) as a second major are required to take 27 credit hours.

Chinese Option

  • Twelve credit hours in language: CHIN 301 and 302 and 305 and 401.
  • CHIN 343.
  • Three credit hours in History: HIST 2256.
  • Three credit hours in East Asian or Japanese culture courses selected from the following: HIST 2256; JAPN 339, 341, 342, 345, 370, *411; RELG 2110.
  • Six credit hours of electives selected from the following courses: 

    CHIN 320, 343, 370; PHIL 336, 431; or any other China-related classes offered on campus, based on pre-approval with the East Asian Studies advisor.

Japanese Option

  • Twelve credit hours in language: JAPN 301 and 302 and 401 and 402.
  • Three credit hours in literature: JAPN 341 or 342.
  • Three credit hours in History: HIST 2256.
  • Three credit hours in East Asian or Chinese culture or history selected from the following courses: CHIN 320, 343, 370; HIST 2256; RELG 2110; PHIL 336.
