Working with Students and Communities

Learning, healing and outreach – in order to be successful, health professional training in New Mexico must take into account the state’s unique clinical and cultural needs. The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Rio Rancho Campus is dedicated to serving the community through opportunities in nursing, medical assistant certification, behavioral health clinical training, and pre-health outreach.

The UNM Health Sciences Rio Rancho Campus is leading the way in developing health educational programs designed for both traditional and non-traditional students so that they have the resources to practice throughout the region. At the UNM Health Sciences Rio Rancho Campus, the goal is to provide life-long learning opportunities for students that will help them integrate seamlessly into the communities they wish to serve.

Rural New Mexico has been managing through a health care provider shortage for years. With that in mind, in 2017, the university dedicated the Rio Rancho campus exclusively for health professional education with a goal of providing cutting-edge classes and resources for undergraduate and graduate coursework.

The campus also serves the community through providing compassionate, respectful behavioral health clinical services through the UNM Medical Group, Behavioral Health Clinic located on the campus. The clinic not only offers assistance with substance use and mental health conditions, but it also provides learning opportunities for health professionals.

The campus is located adjacent to the Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC) in the heart of Rio Rancho’s City Center within Sandoval County.

Current programs include College of Nursing courses for the Bachelor of Nursing program, a collaborative venture with Central New Mexico College offering Medical Assistant training, Pre-health outreach (Health Careers Academy and DreamMakers program through the Health Sciences Center Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion), Mental Health Outreach programs, and behavioral health training. Future programs will continue to expand learning opportunities so students train on state-of-the-art equipment while interacting with the communities they will one day serve.
