The College of Education offers a 24-hour planned program in Library Science as an undergraduate minor or as a teaching field endorsement for those students who hold a Bachelor’s degree and an existing or future New Mexico teaching license. Completion of the 24 hours provides the student eligibility to apply to the New Mexico Education Department (PED) at 300 Don Gaspar Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501-2786 (505-827-6587) for this endorsement or for a teaching license. Study of the organization of book and non-book collections, facilities including design and services in the library and media center. Emphasis on principles of management as applied to libraries including planning, decision-making, organization and human resources.

Study of materials and methods for locating information in general works, encyclopedias, dictionaries, indexes, biographical works, media guides and other major tools in subject fields.

Study of the purpose, history, theory and principles of classification, cataloging and general arrangement of books and other media. Practical application of the Dewey Decimal classification and Sears List of Subject Headings to both book and non-book materials.

Study of the principles of selection and evaluation for developing collections of print and nonprint materials; includes acquisition policies, criteria, tools for selection and book repairs.
