Degree Offered

  • Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (B.A.A.)
Concentrations: Design Studies; Landscape Architecture; Pre-Professional Architecture.

The Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (B.A.A.) is a pre-professional degree that prepares students for admittance to a two-year graduate program in architecture, or for a career in related design fields, or related professions associated with the built environment. The overall intent of the B.A.A. degree program is to provide a firm grounding in the essential ideas, principles, theories and technologies that underlie the built environment. The design studio sequence, the core of the program, is where all the elements of the design process come together in exercises that build increasing skill and sophistication in the student designer.

The B.A.A. program offers three concentrations. B.A.A. students need to select their concentration before they begin their final year of study. The Pre-Professional Architecture concentration prepares students for a two-year professionally accredited Master of Architecture program and a career as a licensed architect. The Design Studies concentration is for students that might choose to pursue other design fields or professions related to the built environment, such as interior design, urban design, industrial design, digital media, digital fabrication, energy modeling, construction management, real estate development, and other fields. The Landscape Architecture concentration prepares students to enroll in a Master of Landscape Architecture program, or work in the field prior to pursuing graduate work.

Admission Information

Students admitted to the University of New Mexico and interested in studying architecture are automatically considered architecture majors if they fill out the Major Declaration form, available during the student's first meeting with the Undergraduate Advisor.

Transfer Students

The Bachelor of Arts in Architecture program welcomes transfer students. UNM application forms are available online. Program enrollment forms are available during the student's first meeting with the Undergraduate Advisor.

Advanced standing is to be determined based on the academic background of the applicant. Transfer course work is evaluated for UNM equivalencies upon admission to UNM. Transfer students seeking advanced standing in the architecture curriculum should apply to UNM as early as possible to expedite this process. A portfolio is required for any courses where design or visualization content was created. A PDF copy of the portfolio may be emailed to the Undergraduate Advisor.

Bachelor of Arts in Architecture

Graduation Requirements

  • Must earn a grade of "C" or better in University of New Mexico General Education curriculum requirements.
  • A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.50 is required for graduation.
  • Advising for undergraduate students is available from the Undergraduate Advisor. Individual faculty members are also available for counseling on matters relating to professional education, architectural internship, and the architectural registration examination process.
  • Design Studio Academic Standard: Students must earn a grade of "C+" or better in studio courses in order to continue in the design studio sequence. A grade of "C" or lower requires permission of the Chair to re-enroll or enroll in a subsequent studio.

Refer to the Undergraduate Program section of this Catalog for information on courses that meet General Education curriculum and the U.S. and Global Diversity and Inclusion requirements.
