Dietetic Internship

The Dietetic Internship is a post-bachelor's program that provides the supervised practice necessary for eligibility to write the Registration Examination for Dietitians. The Dietetic Internship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Place, Suite 200, Chicago, IL 60606-4876, (312) 899-0040, ext. 5400. Applications for the Dietetic Internship are due early in February for August admission.

The Dietetic Internship includes supervised practice in the areas of clinical dietetics, community nutrition and food service management, as well as didactic (classroom) instruction. Interns are enrolled as graduate students at the University of New Mexico; however, completion of the M.S. degree is not required for the Dietetic Internship completion.   • Master of Science in Nutrition (M.S.)

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Nutrition is designed to prepare students for careers in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics including opportunities in administrative and clinical dietetics community nutrition and research. Students gain advanced training in nutrition science and clinical decision making, as well as enhanced skills in designing and interpreting research studies. It is desirable that the candidate has an undergraduate major in nutrition and dietetics or closely related field. Individuals without an undergraduate degree in nutrition should consult a Nutrition Graduate Advisor for more information. Students without prior preparation in nutrition may be accepted into the program following completion of prerequisites. A list of prerequisites is available on the Nutrition and Dietetics program Web site. The degree is available under both Plan I and Plan II in accordance with the regulations found in the Graduate Program section of this Catalog. Plan II consists of a publishable paper. Coursework for this degree can be chosen from a number of areas reflecting the interests and goals of the student and can include health education, counseling, exercise science management, biochemistry/biology and public health courses.
