Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of College of Education and Human Sciences faculty in Nutrition & Dietetics, Exercise Science, and Health Education, and College of Population Health program faculty in Public Health as well as health care professionals at UNM, the Prevention Research Center and other UNM Health Sciences sites. Coursework includes gaining a deeper understanding of a variety of different areas including medical nutrition therapy, research methods, longevity, prevention of chronic diseases, pediatric nutrition, and weight management.

Applicants must have completed an undergraduate Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) to apply for the MS/DI program. Individuals who have not completed a DPD should consult program faculty for more information. Students without prior preparation in nutrition may be accepted into the program following completion of prerequisites. A list of prerequisites is available on the Nutrition and Dietetics program website.

The MS/DI Program offers four plans including Plan I (thesis with dietetic internship), Plan Ib (thesis without dietetic internship), Plan III (coursework and dietetic internship), and Plan IIIb (coursework only without dietetic internship) in accordance with the regulations found in the Graduate Program section of this Catalog. If you have already completed a Dietetic Internship, you may complete Plan Ib or Plan IIIb to fulfill M.S. in Nutrition requirements.

Dietetic Internship

The Dietetic Internship portion of the MS/DI Program is a post-bachelor's program that provides the supervised practice necessary for eligibility to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians. Starting in 2024, individuals must also earn a graduate degree before being eligible to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians. The UNM Dietetic Internship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Place, Suite 2190, Chicago, IL 60606-4876, (312) 899-0040, ext. 5400.
