Admission Requirements

Admissions staff look forward to getting to learn more about each student who applies to UNM’s top-ranked Master of Accounting program. Every applicant to the program is distinct. When reviewing applications, the staff take into consideration the applicant’s unique educational background, work experience, and life achievements. An all-inclusive approach considers the entirety of the application when making admission decisions.

Advisement and Plan of Study

Advisement prior to first-semester enrollment and a formal plan of study is mandatory. A faculty, concentration or graduate advisor will work with each admitted candidate to develop and approve a Plan of Study. Modifications to the initial plan of study may be requested by the student at any time, but must be approved by the faculty, concentration or graduate advisor. Each approved plan is a student-specific set of courses that must be successfully completed for that student to graduate.

Advanced Accounting and Tax Accounting Tracks

The minimum requirements for admission to the M.Acct. are:

1.  a bachelor's degree in accounting from an AACSB-accredited school;
2.  a grade point average of 3.0 for the last 60 credit hours of college coursework including any post-baccalaureate work as well as an average of 3.0 for all accounting courses;
3.  the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The GMAT/GRE is waived for students who have an undergraduate major in accounting from an AACSB-accredited school with a minimum of 3.25 GPA in both upper-division and accounting classes or with a petition based on Academic/Professional background and experience.

Professional Accounting Track

The minimum requirements for admission to the M.Acct. Professional Accounting are:

1.  a grade point average of 3.0 for the last 60 credit hours of college coursework including any post-baccalaureate work;
2.  statement of purpose;
3.  the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The GMAT/GRE is waived for students who have a B.B.A. from an AACSB-accredited school with a minimum of 3.25 GPA in all upper-division coursework or with a petition based on Academic/Professional background and experience. Students granted the waiver should also attend the Anderson School of Management Writing Workshop.

The Professional Accounting track accepts applications for Fall, Spring, or Summer admission. However, the track primarily admits students to begin the program in the Fall Semester because of course scheduling. Students planning to apply for admission to the M.Acct. Professional Accounting track in the Spring or Summer must email ProfMACCT@mgt.unm.edu prior to submission of the application to determine if course requirements necessary for consideration of a Spring or Summer admission are met.
