ECE 566 (3)External modulators WDM system design, other multiple access techniques design issues, analog transmission systems nonlinear processes in optical fibers and their impact on system performance, optical networks, photonic packet switching, coherent lightwave systems, basic principles for homodyne and heterodyne detection, noise reduction, relevant digital modulation formats: PSK, ASK, FSK, DPSK. Practical implementation, performance of synchronous and asynchronous heterodyne systems, phase noise, polarization mismatch.
