The College of Fine Arts offers an interdisciplinary minor in Arts Management (AM) providing students with an educational foundation to explore current and emerging professional practices within a variety of career paths. The AM minor has a flexible framework that is both practical and versatile to meet individual students’ interests regardless what major they are pursuing. Students in the Arts Management minor may pursue their interests in one of five career pathways: Arts Development, Arts Management, Community and Public Art, Arts Entrepreneurship, and Arts Small Business. Within each of the five career paths student will find they can develop a foundation in which to pursue a wide range of career choices including: small business ownership of a gallery, recording studio, or dance studio; self-employed arts consultant, commissioned portrait artist, free-lance art historian researcher/writer or an independent contractor for arts services to state agencies; public relations director for a theater, director of an arts center, community arts program director, or an arts development officer. In addition to framing course clusters aligned with career paths, the Arts Management minor offers a rigorous internship program that can also inform career choices in an array of arts management fields or further study in any number of nationally known Arts Management graduate programs.
The Arts Management minor is possible through the collaboration of the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, College of Fine Arts, School of Architecture and Planning, and the Anderson School of Business.
The Arts Management minor is 25 credits (beyond the UNM core requirement in Fine Arts) consisting of the following course work:
• Required studio course in any arts discipline (3 crs)
Note: Fine Arts majors must take a studio course outside of the major.
• Required Arts Management core courses (9 crs):
FA 229 Intro to Arts Management (3 crs)
MGMT 322 Marketing Management (3 crs)
ENGL 418 Proposal & Grant Writing (3 crs)
• Three additional courses from one of the five Arts Management paths (9 crs)
Arts Development, Arts Management, Community & Public Arts, Arts Small Business, Arts Entrepreneurship
(A complete listing of courses for each AM path is at the end of this section)
• Required Arts Management Internship (4 crs)
Before declaring an Arts Management minor students must have completed the UNM core requirement in fine arts, a studio course in any arts discipline (outside of the arts major for fine art students), and all three required AM core courses. Once a student has completed the required 12 credits leading to an Arts Management minor they may choose an AM pathway and continue on with course work or they may submit a request to initiate an internship.
Note: There are different advantages associated with taking the internship prior to choosing an AM pathway or choosing to finish the AM pathway courses prior to taking the internship. Meet with your advisor to determine which option would work best with your academic schedule.
The Arts Management minor requires students to participate in an internship experience for credit; however, students can take up to six internship credits. To initiate an internship students submit an Arts Management Internship application available through the CFA Advisement Office or can be downloaded from the Arts Management website. Application for AM internships must be submitted the semester prior to the internship (October 1st for Spring Semester; March 15th for Summer Session; June 15th for Fall Semester). The first internship placement is made within the College of Fine Arts in one of several sites and/or programs including: UNM Art Museum, Rodey Theatre, Theatre-X, Popejoy Theatre, Keller Music Hall, John Sommers Gallery, Tamarind Institute, CFA Development Office, or with programs such as Words Afire, Experiments in Film, or Arts in Medicine. For the internship to count towards the AM minor requirements students must enroll in FA 495 Arts Management Internship the same semester they are interning.
Students taking an additional four credit hours of internship are encouraged to take this internship off-campus. The Supervisor of Community Education will arrange an internship in consultation with the student or the student can identify an internship opportunity specific to their career interests. Off campus internships are encouraged so that students can begin to make professional contacts in the career field of their interest.
