Undergraduate Program

College of Arts and Sciences and Asian Studies Major Undergraduate Admission Requirements

A minimum of 26 credit hours; 23 credit hours must be in courses acceptable toward graduation.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 on all work.

Transfer students must have a 2.0 transfer GPA.
Continuing UNM students must have a 2.00 institutional GPA.

Demonstrated academic achievement by satisfying the following:

Completion of the University Speaking and Writing Core.
Completion of the University Mathematics Core.
Completion of the University Foreign Language Core.

Completion of Asian Studies major admission coursework with grade of "C" or better:

One course at any level (excluding 101) from CHIN, JAPN, or ARAB.

Major Study Requirements

The interdepartmental major requires 36 credit hours from the approved Asian Studies course list (below). Of these, 21 must be 300-level or above. Thirty-six credit hours total: 3 credit hours Senior Thesis (COMP, HIST, PHIL, POLS, RELG 453); 6 credit hours History; 6 credit hours Philosophy or Religious Studies; 3 credit hours Geography, Anthropology, Economics, Political Science or Sociology; 12 credit hours in an Asian language; 6 credit hours elective; 453 may not be counted twice. Each student is required to declare a regional focus and to have the proposed course distribution approved by the Asian Studies Committee at the beginning of the junior year. Regional areas of focus are: East Asia, South Asia and the Middle East. A Senior Thesis is required. The student may choose a topic within a single discipline or culture, or may elect an interdisciplinary and/or cross-cultural approach. The Asian Studies Committee appoints two thesis readers, normally the primary supervisor and another faculty member from an appropriate field. Three copies of the thesis must be submitted. Modification of the language requirement may be made on an individual basis with the approval of the Committee Chairperson.

Minor Study Requirements

An interdepartmental minor in Asian Studies consists of at least 18 credit hours in courses selected from the approved list below, including at least 3 credit hours in history, 3 credit hours in philosophy or religious studies and 3 credit hours in geography, anthropology or languages. It is recommended that the student take appropriate language courses. No more than 9 credit hours may be selected in any one department, and courses used to satisfy the major field may not be applied to the minor.
