College of Arts and Sciences and Department of Spanish and Portuguese Undergraduate Admission Requirements

A minimum of 26 credit hours; 23 credit hours must be in courses acceptable toward graduation.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 on all work.

  • Transfer students must have a 2.00 transfer GPA.
  • Continuing UNM students must have a 2.00 institutional GPA.

Demonstrated academic achievement by satisfying the following:

  • Completion of the University Writing and Speaking Core.
  • Completion of the University Mathematics Core.
  • Completion of the University Foreign Language Core.

Completion of Department of Spanish and Portuguese major admission course work with a grade of "C" or better:

  • Spanish: SPAN 202 or 212 or 301 or 302 or 307.
  • Portuguese: PORT 276 or 277.

  • Bachelor of Arts in Portuguese (B.A.)
  • Bachelor of Arts in Spanish (B.A.)

Major Study Requirements

Spanish

30 credit hours in Spanish courses numbered 300 and above. In addition, demonstrated 202 skill level in Portuguese (PORT 276 or PORT 277) must be documented or completed. Use of courses toward this requirement in a language other than Portuguese must be approved by the Spanish and Portuguese department. Seven required courses (21 credit hours) include: 301, 302, 306 or 307, **352, one of the following: **350 or 351, one of the following: **411 or **412, one of the following: **431 or **432. Three elective courses (9 credit hours) must be above 307 with at least one course (3 credit hours) at the 400-level. Only one 301 (3 credit hours) may be applied toward the major. A student may follow a general course of studies or a group of courses in the following areas: Spanish Peninsular Literature, Spanish American Literature, Southwest Hispanic Studies or Hispanic Linguistics. Students planning to enter the major in Spanish should consult with the Undergraduate Advisor for Spanish. All grades must be "C" or better.

Spanish Topics courses 301, **429, **439, 449, and **479 are repeatable as topics change.

Portuguese

30 credit hours in Portuguese courses numbered 276 and above. In addition, demonstrated 202/276 skill level in a language other than Portuguese or English must be documented or completed. Three required courses (12 credit hours) include: 276 or 277 and two of the following: 301, 311, 312. Six elective courses (18 credit hours) at the 300- to 400-level. Students planning to enter the major in Portuguese should consult with the Undergraduate Advisor for Portuguese. All grades must be "C" or better.

Portuguese Topics courses 414 and *461 are repeatable as topics change.


Second Major Study Requirements

Spanish

Twenty-four credit hours in Spanish courses numbered 300 and above. Three required courses (9 credit hours) include: 301; 302; 306 or 307. Five elective courses (15 credit hours) must include: two courses (6 credit hours) above 307, two courses (6 credit hours) at the 400-level, and any appropriate course (3 credit hours) numbered 300 or above. Students planning to enter the second major in Spanish should consult with the Undergraduate Advisor for Spanish. All grades must be "C" or better.

Spanish Topics courses 301, **429, **439, 449, **479 are repeatable as topics change.

Portuguese

Twenty-four credit hours in Portuguese courses numbered 276 and above. Students planning to second major in Portuguese should consult with the Undergraduate Advisor for Portuguese. All grades must be "C" or better.

Portuguese Topics courses 414 and *461 are repeatable as topics change.


Minor Study Requirements

Spanish

Eighteen credit hours in Spanish courses numbered 300 and above. Three required courses (9 credit hours) include: 301; 302; 306 or 307. Three elective courses (9 credit hours) include: at least one course (3 credit hours) above 307, two courses (6 credit hours) may be any appropriate courses numbered 300 or above. Students planning to enter the minor in Spanish should consult with the Undergraduate Advisor for Spanish. All grades must be "C" or better.

Spanish Topics courses 301, **429, **439, 449, and **479 are repeatable as topics change.

Portuguese

Eighteen credit hours in courses numbered 276 and above. Students planning to minor in Portuguese should consult with the Undergraduate Advisor for Portuguese. All grades must be "C" or better.

Portuguese Topics courses 414 and *461 are repeatable as topics change.
