The University of New Mexico–Los Alamos provides innovative, rigorous, and affordable education opportunities to build essential foundations for transfer, leading-edge career programs, and life-long learning opportunities. The University of New Mexico–Los Alamos has an open admission policy that permits entry to all interested students. Advisors at the University of New Mexico–Los Alamos work closely with students who want to obtain an associate degree, a certificate and/or transfer to any four-year institution. Many graduates transfer to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque as well as other institutions across the state and beyond to continue programs in engineering, science, business, and health.
The University of New Mexico—Los Alamos offers small class sizes with an average enrollment of 15 students and retains some of the lowest tuition rates in northern New Mexico. The faculty are highly qualified, with a majority being working professionals in the fields they teach. The campus is located on a beautiful mesa near the Jemez Mountains, richly vegetated with trees and other native plants. The region offers exciting opportunities for hiking, biking, and skiing. The University of New Mexico–Los Alamos has strong ties to the Los Alamos community and the Los Alamos National Laboratory which provides unique educational and professional opportunities to the students.
A variety of specialized programs complement academic studies at the University of New Mexico–Los Alamos. Some of these programs include:
Emergency Medicine and Health Care: The Personal Care Attendant (PCA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) programs utilize a state of the art Emergency Medical Services Training facility to prepare students to work in fields that have high employment potential.
Community Internship Collaboration: The University of New Mexico–Los Alamos partners with the Los Alamos National Laboratory and local businesses to supply a semester-long project-based work experience for paid student internships. Students work alongside a mentor and earn academic credit and employability skills that strengthen their portfolio of experience.
The University of New Mexico–Los Alamos also has many programs that serve the community, which include:
Community Education: Non-credit courses are provided for educational enrichment, professional development, and recreation. Often the courses are short-term, with some scheduled at one or two full-days. Besides courses like yoga, language studies, and computer topics, Community Education has specialized programs for youth in the summertime. The Customized Training Program works with area businesses to design low-cost, specialized training to meet employers’ needs and fit work schedules.
Adult Learning Center: The campus-based learning center is designed to improve the educational level of adults, out-of-school youth, and non-English speaking persons sixteen (16) years of age and older. Free classes, instructional materials, tutoring and a computer practice lab is available for English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and preparation for a high school equivalency credential (HiSet). In continuation of our efforts to serve the diverse populations of northern New Mexico, the University of New Mexico–Los Alamos off-site locations continue to offer Adult Basic Education in Bernalillo, Cuba, Pojoaque, and the Pueblos of Santa Ana, Cochiti, and Zia.
