Introduction

College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences

The College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences is comprised of the University Libraries system of four libraries located on the central campus and the Organization, Information and Learning Sciences academic program, and The University of New Mexico Press.

University Libraries

University Libraries serves the entire University community with quality materials and services, and supports users at all levels, from entering freshman to scholars working on highly advanced research topics.

University Libraries is comprised of four libraries as well as various special collections and supporting programs:

Fine Arts and Design Library
Parish Memorial Library
Zimmerman Library
Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections

University Libraries holdings include books (4 million), journals, serials, manuscripts, and digital resources. University Libraries also provides patrons with access to specialized equipment such as desktop or laptop computers, copiers, printers, free scanning, and microform readers and printers. Electronic resources are also available online. University Libraries special collections, housed in the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections, include rare books, manuscripts, photographs, music, maps, art, pictorials, artifacts, and architectural plans. University Libraries is part of a state-wide shared Regional Depository for federal government publications as well as a depository for State of New Mexico publications and is a gateway for access to government information.

University Libraries reference services provide research and information assistance via our Ask a Librarian service at: (505) 277-9100, by text message: (505) 431-4711, online chat or email, and in person at all locations. Workshops on using electronic information resources and course-related library instruction are provided. Special services for students with disabilities are provided in cooperation with the office of Accessibility Services.

Centennial Science and Engineering Library

The Centennial Science and Engineering Library serves the School of Engineering, plus biological, environmental, and earth and planetary sciences; physics and astronomy; mathematics; chemistry; psychology; and a number of research institutes. The library houses the Map and Geographic Information Center (MAGIC) and the Research Data Services Program. Centennial Library is located on two underground floors in the Electrical and Computer Engineering building complex.

Fine Arts and Design Library

The Fine Arts and Design Library supports curriculum in the fields of art and art history, photography, music, theatre, dance, interdisciplinary film and digital media, architecture, and landscape architecture. The Fine Arts and Design Library is located on the top floor of the School of Architecture and Planning building, George Pearl Hall.

William J. Parish Memorial Library for Business and Economics

Parish Library supports the curriculum of the Anderson School of Management and the Department of Economics, as well as the New Mexico Business community. Parish Library is located in the Anderson Graduate School of Management building.

Zimmerman Library

Located on the north side of Smith Plaza in the center of the main campus, Zimmerman Library houses book, periodical, and microform collections in the humanities, social sciences, and education, and the majority of the Government Documents Collection. The Indigenous Nations Library Program, Digital Initiatives and Scholarly Communication unit, and Latin American Collections are also based here. Zimmerman Library features a large number of computers and group study spaces, and is consistently voted the best place to study on campus by students.

The Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections, located in the West Wing of Zimmerman Library, is a major resource for the study of New Mexico, the Southwest, the American West, and Latin America. The Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections (CSWR) is also a special handling facility for archives, manuscripts, historical photographs, architectural archives and rare books. The Anderson Reading Room is a service point for all of the collections. CSWR manages the digitization of a large number of special collections, making them freely available online to scholars across the world.

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences

The Organization, Information and Learning Sciences (OILS) program focuses on adult learning; the design, development, delivery, and evaluation of training; organization development; learning sciences; distance education; e-Learning; and instructional technology systems. Bachelor-, master-, and doctoral-level degrees are awarded in Organization, Information and Learning Sciences. OILS program offices are located on the second floor of Zimmerman Library.

UNM Press

Established in 1929, The University of New Mexico Press produces scholarly books in anthropology, archaeology, indigenous studies, Latin American studies, art, architecture, and the history, literature, ecology, and cultures of the American West, as well as general interest fiction, poetry, and nonfiction on New Mexico and the Southwest. With over 1,200 titles currently in print, UNM Press is the largest book publisher in New Mexico and an important element in enhancing the scholarly reputation and worldwide visibility of the University.

Probation and Suspension

Students enrolled in the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences are placed on probation at the end of any semester in which the cumulative GPA at the University of New Mexico falls below 2.0.

Students on probation are liable for suspension at the end of any semester in which the cumulative GPA does not rise to 2.0 or better.

Students placed on probation may be continued on probation, if they raise their cumulative GPA to at least 2.5 and have completed at least one-half of the student's course load which applies towards the student's major, minor, or concentration. If these conditions are not met, the student is suspended from the University of New Mexico.

The first suspension is for one semester. The second suspension is for one year. The third suspension is for five years.

At the end of the suspension period, a student must apply for readmission to the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences with a written petition addressed to the Senior Associate Dean. All petitions for readmission or revocation of suspension must be received by the Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences Advisement Center no later than one week prior to the start of the semester in which the student wishes to return.

Dean's List

After each semester, the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences compiles the Dean's List of undergraduate students who have achieved academic excellence in that semester. To qualify, students must be enrolled in the College and have earned at semester GPA of 3.5 or higher for at least 12 graded credit hours in that semester. See "Dean's List" in the Student Services Information section of this Catalog for more information.
