College of Arts and Sciences and Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences Undergraduate Admission Requirements

A minimum of 26 credit hours; 23 credit hours must be in courses acceptable toward graduation.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 on all course work.

  • Transfer students must have a 2.00 transfer GPA.
  • Continuing UNM students must have a 2.00 institutional GPA.

Demonstrated academic achievement by satisfying the following:

  • Completion of General Education Curriculum: Communication.
  • Completion of General Education Curriculum: Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Completion of General Education Curriculum: Second Language.

Completion of Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences admission course work with a grade of "C" or better:

  • ANTH 1140 or 1155 or 327; or PSYC 1110 or 2120; or SOCI 1110. 
  • BIOL 1110 or 1140; or MATH 1220 or 1240 or 1430 or 1512.

Major Study

1.  36 credit hours in required courses: SHS *302, *303, 310, 321, 330, *425, 428, 430, 431, 450, *458, and *459.

2. 18 credit hours in required support courses:

  • 3 credit hours in basic human communication processes. Required: LING 301.
  • 3 credit hours in biological sciences. Recommended: BIOL 1140.
  • 3 credit hours in physical sciences. Recommended: PHYS 1125.
  • 3 credit hours in college-level statistics. Required: MATH 1350 or PSYC 2510.
  • 6 credit hours in behavioral and/or social sciences (normal/abnormal human behavior, development across the lifespan, social interaction, and issues of culturally diverse populations). Recommended: ANTH 1140, 1155, 1170; PSYC 1110, 2120; SOCI 1110.

Prerequisites or corequisites may exist. Check with individual department listings in this Catalog. These courses may also be used to meet UNM Core Curriculum requirements.

3.  A grade of at least "C" must be earned in all required SHS courses and required support courses. The credit/no credit (CR/NC) option may not be used. Note that the UNM Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology requires that grades earned in SHS courses completed at the undergraduate level must be "B" or better.

4.  Recommended minors include Anthropology, Art, Communication, Computer Science, Criminology, Family and Child Studies, Latin American Studies, Linguistics, Management, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, Southwest Culture Studies, Spanish, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
