All 400 and 500 level courses are restricted. Students are encouraged to contact the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences for advisement prior to registration (505-277-4453).


College of Arts and Sciences and Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences Undergraduate Admission Requirements

A minimum of 26 credit hours; 23 credit hours must be in courses acceptable toward graduation.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 on all work.

  • Transfer students must have a 2.0 transfer GPA.
  • Continuing UNM students must have a 2.00 institutional GPA.

Demonstrated academic achievement by satisfying the following:

  • Completion of the University Speaking and Writing Core.
  • Completion of the University Mathematics Core.
  • Completion of the University Foreign Language Core.

Completion of Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences admission coursework with grades of "C" or better:

  • MATH 121 or 150 or 162 or 180; or BIOL 110 or 123.
  • CJ 125 or 325; or PSY 105 or 220; or SOC 101 or 230; or ANTH 110 or 130 or 327. 

Major Study Requirements

  1. Thirty-six hours in required courses:  Speech and Hearing Sciences 302, 303, 310, 321, 330, 425, 428, 430, 431, 450, 458, and 459.
  2. Twenty-one hours in required support courses*:
    1. Three credit hours in basic human communication processes. Required: LING 301.
    2. Three credit hours in biological sciences. Recommended: BIOL 123.
    3. Three credit hours in physical sciences. Recommended: PHYC 108.
    4. Three credit hours in college level mathematics. Required: MATH 121 (College Algebra) or more advanced (e.g., MATH 123, 150, 162, 180).
    5. Three credit hours in college level statistics. Required: PSY 200 or STAT 145.
    6. Six credit hours in behavioral and/or social sciences (normal/abnormal human behavior, development across the life span, social interaction, and issues of culturally diverse populations). Recommended: PSY 105, 220, SOC 101, ANTH 110, 130, 160.

*  Prerequisites or corequisites may exist. Check with department listing in this catalog. These courses may also be used to meet Core Curriculum requirements.
