The Master of Science (M.S.) in Nutrition is designed to prepare students for careers in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics, including opportunities in research, clinical nutrition, community nutrition and public health. Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of College of Education and Human Sciences faculty in Nutrition, Exercise Science, Health Education, and College of Population Health program faculty in Public Health as well as health care professionals at UNM, the Prevention Research Center and other UNM Health Sciences sites. Coursework includes gaining a deeper understanding of a variety of different areas including medical nutrition therapy, research methods, longevity, and weight management.
It is desirable that the candidate has an undergraduate major in nutrition and dietetics or closely related field. Individuals without an undergraduate degree in nutrition should consult program faculty for more information. Students without prior preparation in nutrition may be accepted into the program following completion of prerequisites. A list of prerequisites is available on the Nutrition and Dietetics program Web site.
The degree is available under both Plan I (thesis) and Plan II (non-thesis) in accordance with the regulations found in the Graduate Program section of this Catalog. Plan II students are required to complete a publishable paper.
