The University's distance education mission was established in 1999. As of 2017, all distance education at UNM is conducted online.

UNM Online delivers high-quality online programs across the state and around the world. At the University of New Mexico, online courses offer diverse interactions among classmates and instructors, and use the same rigorous materials as are provided in their face-to-face classroom counterparts. Online courses offer students freedom in choosing when and where learning takes place. Through enterprise learning management and incorporating technology such as for media, web conferencing, and proctoring, degree programs are offered largely or exclusively online. Other programs are completed using a combination of online classes and classes taken in a face-to-face setting at the Albuquerque Main Campus.

UNM Online supports online students with guidance on the tools and skills needed to be successful. For faculty teaching online, the Online Course Development and Faculty Services team provides instructional design, training and course development assistance. UNM Online oversees compliance, regulatory, and other accreditation functions associated with the delivery of distance education across the state, nation and world. The unit also accepts requests for new online courses; coordinates online course scheduling, including an Online Schedule, and assists academic units in developing Managed Online Programs.

Offered at graduate and undergraduate levels, Managed Online Programs run in 8-week course cycles at multiple start times throughout the year. They are also offered at a flat tuition rate regardless of a student’s residency status.

An overview of online education at the University of New Mexico is featured on the UNM Online Web site. The Web site outlines two types of online course delivery, the time commitment successful students allocate per course, the student code of conduct, and contact information. UNM Online welcomes inquiries by phone, (866) 869-6040 or (505) 277-5765; or by email  online@unm.edu.
